3rd Generation iPad Shipments To Reach 12-15 Million Units In 2Q2012
Apple launched iPad 3 aka the new iPad in 10 countries on March 16th a week later more than 24 countries joined the list which made it the fastest worldwide roll out in the history of Apple Inc. Now that we’re getting close to June of 2012 new reports regarding iPad 3 shipments are surfacing from different sources. Digitimes is reporting that Apple’s primary iDevice assembler Foxconn is ramping up an huge order of 12-15 million iPad 3 units in 2Q2012. This is 6-8 million more units compared to iPad 3′s launch orders.
Shipments from the new iPad supply chain are expected to expand significantly in the second quarter of 2012, with iPad assembler Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry) to see its shipments of new iPads grow to12-15 million units in the second quarter compared to six million units shipped in the first quarter, according to an industry estimate.
Despite all the heating and charging issues iPad 3 is doing great in the market. Apple sold out pre-orders in less than 24 hours and the company sold 3 million iPad 3 units in just 3 days of its launch, now that’s a remarkable number. Today’s report also indicated that Apple’s touch panel suppliers TPK and Wintek supplied almost 6-8 million touch panel in first quarter.
But as a sharp contrast to a strong second-quarter growth forecast for Foxconn, iPad touch module suppliers TPK Holding and Wintek both are expected to post only a moderate 25-30% growth in the second quarter, added the industry sources.
TPK and Wintek each shipped about 6-7 million touch modules for iPads in the first quarter, and Chimei Innolux (CMI) shipped another one million units, revealed the sources.
Given that touch panel makers had shipped over 10 million touch modules for iPads in the first quarter, some industry sources are concerned that touch module suppliers might be forced to lower their shipment targets for the second quarter should demand for new iPads turn weak starting the quarter.
These shipments may not be 100% accurate but they do indicate strong iPad 3 sales through out the quarter.
