Apple Is Internally Testing Next Generation iPhone With 3.9 Inch Screen And 1136 x 640 Resolution
9to5Mac is now reporting that Apple is internally testing two different versions of next generation iPhone. Both of these prototype iPhones are carrying much rumored large 3.95 inch large screen. According to sources, these phones are in enclosed in thick shell in order to prevent any design (form factor) related leaks. These devices are being used by undisclosed employees. Prototype iPhone units with large screen are in “PreEVT” development stage. The report also notes that these two devices are codenamed as N41AP (5,1) and N42AP (5,2).
It is still not clear which one of these devices would make its way to market. Both of these devices carry a large 3.95 inch display with 176 more pixels. These additional 176 pixel will bump iPhone’s resolution to 640 x 1136. It will also change the aspect ration of device from 3:2 to 16:9 which make 16:9 video playback more native.
Both of these phones sport a new, larger display that is 3.95 inches diagonally. Apple will not just increase the size of the display and leave the current resolution, but will actually be adding pixels to the display. The new iPhone display resolution will be 640 x 1136. That’s an extra 176 pixels longer of a display. The screen will be the same 1.94 inches wide, but will grow to 3.45 inches tall. This new resolution is very close to a 16:9 screen ratio, so this means that 16:9 videos can play full screen at their native aspect ratio.
If the reports are true then it would be Apple’s third major design change in 5 year history of iPhone. Original iPhone also known as iPhone 2G was introduced with a metallic back, in 2008 Apple changed the design and introduced plastic back in iPhone 3G and the design remained same for iPhone 3GS which was launched in 2009. Next major design change occurred in 2010 when Apple unveiled 4th generation of iPhone — iPhone 4. Just like iPhone 3GS Apple’s 5th generation of iPhone — iPhone 4S didn’t get any design makeover.
Currently four major touch panel manufacturers are being tapped for 3.95 inch touch panel which includes Sony Mobile Display, LG Display, Sharp Display and Japan Display. It is also rumored that Apple would also replace standard 30 pin dock connector and introduce a new micro dock connector. More details regarding these prototype iPhone 5 units would be made available very soon.
6th generation iPhone is due by the end of this years. Apple analysts believe that the company would follow last year’s strategy and launch iPhone 5 (the new iPhone) in September-October time frame.
