Apple Ordering Next Generation iPhone Screens,"which measure at least 4 inches " - WSJ
Wall Street Journal is now reporting that Apple has started placing orders for new display panels which will be used in next iteration of iPhone. 6th generation of iPhone is due in September- October time frame this year. The report also claims that Apple is finally moving from their standard 3.5 inch screen size which was introduced in 2007. According to source familiar with the matter production of these new larger display panels would start next month. iPhone 2G aka original iPhone which was launched in 2007 had a 3.5 screen, Apple introduced Retina display in 2010 but that too was no bigger than 3.5 inches.
HONG KONG—Apple Inc., which is expected to launch its next-generation iPhone later this year, has ordered screens from its Asian suppliers that are bigger than the ones used in iPhones since they debuted in 2007, people familiar with the situation said.
Production is set to begin next month for the screens, which measure at least 4 inches diagonally compared with 3.5 inches on the iPhone 4S, the latest phone from Apple, the people said.
It was highly speculated that Apple may introduce a new larger screen in 5th generation of iPhone but the fruit company had other plans. iPhone 4S which is Apple’s latest 5th generation iPhone didn’t get a major make over, Apple gave it a hardware bump with faster A5 processor. Apple analysts now have firm belief that the company would definitely introduce a larger screen because other competitive smartphones like Galaxy S III, Nokia Lumia and other HTC smarphones have larger display panel than iPhone.
Reuters later confirmed WSJ’s report and claimed that three companies have been tapped in order meet the demads of upcoming iPhone. These companies include LG Display, Sharp, and Japan Display Inc. Samsung who was Apple’s primary Retina display provided is not the picture right now.
It is still unclear how Apple is planning to use 4.0 inch display, there is a possibility that Apple may include a 4.0 inch display and somehow maintain their aspect ration. But it would be too early to comment but we would definitely get a hint from iOS 6.
Loyal iPhone customers are also demanding a major change in screen size of iPhone. Many iPhone lovers have already suggested how Apple can manage to put a 4.0 inch screen without making it more wide. Some designers believe that Apple can offer a taller iPhone with 4.0 inches display but for that Apple have to change their aspect ration which can create problem for iOS app developers.
