AT&T Begins Unlocking Off-Contract iPhones
As promised, AT&T has started unlocking those iPhones which are off contract now. AT&T is one of the largest US carriers in US and Apple’s early carrier partner, most iPhone users in USA are on AT&T because it was the only official partner of Apple till early 2011. The carrier announced that they will start unlocking off-contract iPhones starting from April 8th. AT&T had a history of “not unlocking” iPhones which were even off-contract. iPhone users who have paid all their contract fees plus termination fees can now contact AT&T support to get their iPhones unlocked. The carriers unlocked half a dozen iPhones upon receiving special orders from Apple’ CEO office last month.
An iPhone 3GS user successfully got his iPhone unlocked from AT&T today:
Today, 4/8/12, I called AT&T to unlock my contract free 3GS. Took 30 minutes on T’s end to get the unlock code, and only 5 minutes to perform a backup and restore via iTunes. Interestingly enough, the phone number shows as NA in the iTunes screen. Same IMEI and ICCID if you click on the same spot.
A lot people are asking about unlocking procedure and how they can get their iPhones unlocked officially, here’s the thing, first you need to check whether you’re eligible for this unlocking service or not. According to the statement which was issued almost 2 days ago AT&T will evaluate your account and unlock your device if it’s eligible to avail this service.
Beginning Sunday, April 8, we will offer qualifying customers the ability to unlock their AT&T iPhones. The only requirements are that a customer’s account must be in good standing, their device cannot be associated with a current and active term commitment on an AT&T customer account, and they need to have fulfilled their contract term, upgraded under one of our upgrade policies or paid an early termination fee.
Most iPhones are tied in a 2 year contract and we have thousands of people who are currently locked on iPhone 4 baseband 4.11.08. Unfortunately not all of you will get your iPhones unlocked under this factory unlocking scheme because most iPhone 4 devices are still under contract but iPhone 3GS users have a great chance of getting their iPhones unlocked. After an exchange of a few words with AT&T support staff I concluded there is still a chance that some iPhone 4 users can avail this offer. Chances are slim but it’s still worth a shot, if you want to contact AT&T support staff simply dial +1-800-288-2020.
We will keep you updated on this, stay tuned!
