How To Enable Or Disable Hidden iTunes "Now Playing" Pop-Up Notification On Your Mac OS X Lion [Guide]

Apple heads are very well aware of the fact that Apple hides a lot of stuff, be it iOS related or OS X. Today, an amazing hidden feature of Mac OS X Lion was revealed, though it’s pretty small feature but it looks really classy on your Mac OS X Lion desktop. It turns out there exists a native iTunes “Now Playing” notification feature which displays a very sleek pop-up notification above your iTunes icon showing artist name and title of song which is being played on iTunes.

This feature exists in Mac OS X 10.7 aka Lion only and it’s pretty easy to activate/enable this hidden iTunes notification system. You can activate this hidden iTunes notification system by following these steps:

Step 1: Before you continue first thing you should do is quit your iTunes.

Step 2: Open Terminal.

If you don’t you know where Terminal is, you can simply write Terminal in Mac OS X Lion Search Bar or directly navigate to it, it’s found in Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities

Step 3: Copy and paste the following command in Terminal :

defaults write com.apple.dock itunes-notifications -bool TRUE;killall Dock

This command will activate/ enable hidden iTunes notification system in Mac OS X but you can take it to next level and put and iTunes logo inside it which looks pretty awesome.

Step 4: To add iTunes logo inside this notification pop-up add the following command in Terminal:

defaults write com.apple.dock notification-always-show-image -bool TRUE;killall Dock

Step 5: You’re good to go, open up your iTunes and give it a shot.

As i mentioned before, this feature looks pretty neat on your desktop but if you don’t like it you can also disable it. Like any other feature this hidden iTunes notification system can also be disabled and you can do so by following these steps:

Step 1: Like we did before quit your iTunes before proceeding.

Step 2: Open your Mac OS X Lion’s Terminal.

Step 3: Copy the  following command lines and paste them in your Terminal :

defaults delete com.apple.dock itunes-notifications

defaults delete com.apple.dock notification-always-show-image;killall Dock

And this hidden iTunes “Now Playing” feature will be disabled again. If you ever want to enable it again you can simply follow aforementioned steps to enable this notification system on your Mac OS X Lion.
