RedSn0w1

This was quick! iPhone-Dev team has released an updated version of their jailbreaking tool redsn0w to jailbreak iOS 5.1. Apple released iOS 5.1 update yesterday after the new iPad’s launch event. Redsn0w 0.9.10b6 brings a tethered jailbreak for non A5 devices including iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPod Touch 3G, iPod Touch 4G and iPad 1 running  iOS 5.1. This is is ONLY for A4 devices, those who have already jailbreaked their A5 devices (iPhone 4S and iPad 2) are advised to stay wherever they are. iPhone 4S and iPad 2 owner if you want to keep your jailbreak DO NOT update to iOS 5.1.

Redsn0w 0.9.10b6 Release Notes:

With all of that in mind, we realize that some of you non-A5 jailbreakers are itching to get to 5.1, even though there seems to be no compelling new feature there. Because of geohot’s limera1n exploit, those with devices earlier than the iPad2 can test the 5.1 jailbreak waters if they really want to, using redsn0w 0.9.10b6.

Note For Unlockers:

If you rely on iPhone unlock then do not restore a stock version of iOS 5.1 to your iPhone. iOS 5.1 comes with a new baseband 4.12.01 for iPhone 4 which is still not unlockable right now. If you want to update your iPhone to iOS 5.1 then create and restore a custom IPSW file of iOS 5.1 using redsn0w which will preserve your baseband.

An updated version of ultrasn0w will be released in coming days to unlock supported baseband only.

Note: Before we go any further you should know that this is a tethered jailbreak which means you will have to connect your iOS device to computer every time it restarts to boot it in jailbroken state.
