How To Unlock iPhone 5 Baseband 1.00.16 [FAQs]
Apple released their 6th generation of iPhone in a special media event on September 12th, 2012. iPhone 5 is available for sale at all Apple stores in US and people who pre-ordered also got it in their mailbox on September 21st. Now that the iPhone 5 is out in public, a lot of people are looking for ways to use their carrier locked iPhone 5 on other networks. But before jumping in to iPhone 5 unlocking information we will talk more about its hardware.
iPhone 5 carrier Qualcomm baseband chip which supports almost all 3G and 4G networks in the world. I’ve used the word “almost” because there’s no concrete evidence that iPhone 5 supports all 4G networks in the world. iPhone 5′s baseband or let’s just say firmware version of 1.00.16 which is pretty much like what we’ve already seen in iPhone 4S.
Now let me answer some frequently asked question regarding iPhone 5 baseband 1.00.16 unlocking:
Is it possible to unlock iPhone 5 baseband 1.00.16?
Well, let’s start with the good news first. Apple offered iPhone 5 on 3 major US carriers which are AT&T, Verizon and Sprint. The good news is that Verizon iPhone 5 is being shipped GSM unlocked. Yes, you read that right. If you have a Verizon iPhone 5 you can use it on AT&T and T-Mobile or any other GSM network you want. Before you get all excited, I cannot confirm it’s working outside United States but I can confirm that you can use it on T-Mobile and AT&T in United States. There’s no confirmation about Sprint iPhone 5 but I believe the story is similar in case of Sprint iPhone 5. So, even if you buy a Verizon iPhone 5 on contract you can use it on GSM networks.
Is it possible to factory unlock iPhone 5?
Apple is not taking orders for factory unlocked iPhone 5 and as this iPhone has just arrived in the market we cannot confirm anything about its factory unlock status.
Can we software unlock iPhone 5 baseband 1.00.16 with Ultrasn0w?
I get this question a lot and every time I have to answer it thoroughly. Ultrasn0w unlock aka software unlock is something which relies on so many other factors that it’s really hard to say whether iPhone 5 baseband 1.00.16 would get an Ultrasn0w unlock or not. We can take iPhone 4S as an example, iPhone Dev-Team announced that they have found vulnerabilities in iPhone 4S baseband chip but they didn’t release any Ultrasn0w unlock for iPhone 4S instead it was unlocked using interposer SIMs like Gevey, Rebel and R-SIM. iPhone 4S has been jailbroken but there is no ultrasn0w unlock available for it. Unlocking and jailbreaking are two separate things and you should never confuse them.
That said, iPhone 5 is still a virgin. No dev team has claimed anything about iPhone 5 jailbreaking. I hope we get to hear some good stuff very soon but as of this writing there is no possibility of iPhone 5 baseband 1.00.16 unlock with Ultrasn0w.
Is Gevey or any other hardware unlock manufacturer working on iPhone 5 unlock?
This is something we’re interested in. Hardware unlocks saved iPhone 4S and gave their owners freedom to use it on other GSM networks. According to my sources, hardware unlock manufacturers including Gevey are looking in to this issue and YES they’re working on it.
When would I get iPhone 5 unlock?
It can take days, weeks, months or probably more than months. A lot of things are not clear at this point in time, so, it’s really hard to put weight on any claim. Let the dust settle, let the demand increase and I’m sure that there WILL be a solution.
We will keep you updated on this, stay tuned!
