iOS 5.1 Jailbreak Demonstrated On iPad 2 By i0n1c [Photos]
Apple released their major iOS 5.1 update on March 7th during new iPad’s launch event. iOS 5.1 update brought couple of new features and fixed some major bugs like battery drainage issue as well but it also patched Pod2G’s Corona 5.0.1 Untether exploit which was used to jailbreak all A4 and A5 devices running iOS 5.0.1. iPhone Dev team released an updated version of Redsn0w–redsn0w 0.9.10b6– to jailbreak iOS 5.1 but the jailbreak was limited to non A5 device only and it was tethered. iPhone 4S and iPad 2 owners were advised to stay on lower iOS firmware because once updated, there is no way to downgrade A5 devices to a lower firmware version right now even if you have your SHSH blobs saved.
Stefan Esser aka i0n1c, famous iOS security expert and the guy who was behind iOS 4.x.x untethered jailbreak is back with a jailbreak. i0n1c has just demonstrated iOS 5.1 jailbreak on his iPad 2. Remember that this is the first A5 iOS device which has been jailbroken on iOS 5.1. i0n1c has been teasing about his iOS 5.1 jailbreak adventure on Twitter from a long time but today he posted pictures of his iPad 2 jailbroken on iOS 5,1 and running latest 1.1.5 version of Cydia. There are couple of things which are still unclear right now, 1) is he planning to release this jailbreak publicly or not 2) is it an untethered or tethered iOS 5.1 jailbreak 3) is it stable 4) does it work on iPhone 4S or not.
We’re certain that this jailbreak would also work on iPhone 4S units which are currently running iOS 5.1. Couple of weeks ago i0n1c advised everyone to download Kakao Talk messenger which allegedly hid a mysterious exploit which could be used to jailbreak iOS 5.1. No further details were made available by i0n1c on this mysterious advise. On the other hand Pod2G who gave us iOS 5.0.1′s untethered jailbreak is also busy finding vulnerabilities in iOS 5.1 but there’s no need of it now.
We still recommend you to stay on iOS 5.0.1 with your untethered jailbreak because it is still not sure when this jailbreak is coming out. iPhone owners who rely on unlocking should stay away from iOS 5.1 because Apple has introduced two new basebands in iOS 5.1 which are still unlockable. iPhone 4S users who’ve unlocked their devices with Gevey SIM or any other interposer SIM should also avoid iOS 5.1 updated because Gevey SIM or any other hardware unlock is not compatible with iOS 5.1.
March madness is still on and we will keep you updated on this, stay tuned!
