iOS Apps Running On Apple TV 2G At 720p [Photos, Video]
Converting a $99 1GHz Apple TV into a proper iOS device with Apps running in 720p, sounds good right? Well Steve Troughton-Smith has already done that, he was working on porting iOS Apps on Apple TV and he made real quick progress in this process. He has successfully ported some native and some jailbreak Apps on Apple’s set top box TV.
If you think porting iOS apps to Apple TV is real easy then you should know that IT’S NOT. All iOS device has Spring Board which works as a platform on which whole iOS apps works but there’s no Spring Board in Apple TV. In case you’re wondering how they managed to get Spring Board on Apple TV (no they didn’t copy paste it) they used MobileX which is another version of Spring Board written from scratch and VNC sever. If you’re not familiar with VNC sever it’s a technology which displays screen of another computer on your screen via TCP/IP.
So far the whole project which is being led by Steve Troughton-Smith is going great they’ve successfully tested a lot of iOS Apps and they work perfectly fine. So a big question which you guys must be thinking right now; what can we run on our Apple TV? Well the mission is to port almost all iOS apps on Apple TV make it a complete iOS device but it’s going to take some time, for now developers have test following iOS Apps on Apple TV 2G.
Facebook iOS App on Apple TV 2G:
Yup, Facebook has been tested on Apple TV 2G and it’s working, Steve Troughton-Smith posted pictures of working Facebook iOS App on Apple TV 2G.
iPad Like UI For Apple TV 2G:
And that’s another yes, they’ve tested iPad “like” UI on Apple TV 2G and it’s working as well, though you can always airplay the fun on your big screen but making Apple TV run iOS app is fun too. Here’s a picture of iPad GUI on Apple TV 2G.
Cydia on Apple TV 2G:
Jailbreakers must be jumping right now; yes Cydia is also working on Apple TV 2G. Cydia is home to thousands of useful tweaks and apps which Apple won’t ever allow in their App Store.

iOS Games on Apple TV 2G:
Not a lot of games were tested on this port but yeah Angry Birds is working on, Steve Troughton-Smith posted a picture of Angry Birds running on Apple TV in 720p.
Here’s a video of this project:
This whole project is still not ready for release as yet; there is a lot of pending work which needs to be taken care of. According to developer Steve Troughton-Smith who is working on this project there are still some glitches and a lot of applications “crash massively”. So yeah it can take some time, as always we don’t have a release date for this project as yet.
We will keep you updated on this, stay tuned!
