Pegatron To Ship 3 Million iPad Mini Units In Fourth Quarter, Launch In October: Barclays
Just before the launch Apple’s all new iPhone 5 it became very clear that the company is just going to unveil their 6th generation of iPhone along with iPod touch lineup. Rumors about a combined iPhone 5 and iPad mini launch died when the company rolled out media invitations for their special iPhone 5 launch event. It was also reported that the Fruit Company would launch the much rumored iPad mini in another special media event in October this year.
Barclays’ recent research note (dated September 27th) offers some new information regarding Apple’s upcoming iPad mini. The British bank have revised their iPad mini shipment figures and according to their new estimates, Pegatron will is expected to ship 3 million units of iPad mini in fourth quarter. This figure is 40% less than Barclays’ previous estimate in which they mentioned that Pegatron will land with 70% iPad mini orders. 3 million iPad mini units would result in a revenue of US 552.4$ million for Pegatron.
One of the core reason for this significant drop in iPad mini orders is Pegatron’s “lower yield rate”. According to Kirk Yang, a Hong Kong-based analyst at Barclays:
“Unlike Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., Pegatron lacks the experience for tablet assembly, which has a long learning curve,”
Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. aka Foxconn would assemble 6-7 million units of iPad mini. Foxconn is Apple’s primary supplier for all iOS devices including iPhone, iPod Touch and the iPad.
This research note iterates previous reports about a possible October launch time frame for iPad mini.
According to Yang:
As most iPad component vendors ramp up shipments in September that would continue into the fourth quarter of 2012, we do not see any signs of a postponed shipment schedule, suggesting an on-time October product launch,
It is highly expected that Apple would launch 7.85 inch iPad mini by the end of this year. Accurate details about iPad mini’s hardware (RAM, processor, cameras) are still scant.
