ios-5.0.1

Apple released iOS 5.0.1 software update for iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad 1, iPad 2 and iPod Touch 4G earlier today. Good news is that developers who want to jailbreak their iOS devices on iOS 5.0.1 can do so with latest version of redsn0w which is redsn0w 0.9.9b7.

MuscleNerd of iPhone-Dev team also confirmed that iOS 5.0.1 can be jailbroken with redsn0w 0.9.9b7.

Devs trying today’s 5.0.1 beta can JB with existing redsn0w http://is.gd/6eek4Y(but select the 5.0 IPSW thru GUI or command line)

A fair notice: If you’re not a developer you don’t need to update your iOS devices (illegally) to iOS 5.0.1 right now . Wait for iOS 5.0.1 public release which is expected in coming weeks.

How To Jailbreak iOS 5.0.1:

Note: Before you proceed you should know that this jailbreak is still tethered. iPad 2 and iPhone 4S are still not supported.

Things you will need during this process:

  • iOS 5.0.1 IPSW, download it from here
  • iTunes 10.5, download it from here
  • Redsn0w 0.9.9b7, download it from here

Step 1: Connect your iOS device to computer and make a backup all your contacts and phone data (Good practice)

Step 2: Restore your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch with iOS 5.0.1

Step 3: Launch redsn0w 0.9.9b7 which you downloaded earlier and go to Extras

Step 4: Click Select IPSW and point redsn0w to iOS 5 IPSW file (NOT iOS 5.0.1)

Step 5: Go Back and click Jailbreak, redsn0w will patch the file.

Step 6: Check Install Cydia and click Next

Step 7: In this step make sure your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch is completely turned off.

Click Next and follow the instructions on your screen to put your iPhone in DFU mode;

  • Hold down both the Home button and the Power button for 10 seconds.
  • Release the Power button and continue holding the Home button until (approx 15-25 sec) your device’s screen turn black.

Step 8: Redsn0w will exploit your iOS device with limera1n, sit back and relax while redsn0w jailbreaks your iOS device. Once this process is complete you will be notified that RedSn0w is done. When your iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch finishes rebooting (5 minutes or so) it will be jailbroken and running iOS 5.0.1.

Booting In Tethered Mode:

Once you have jailbroken you will need to rerun redsn0w to boot tethered.

Step 1: From the main RedSn0w menu click the Extras button.

Step 2: Select Just boot from the Extras menu to just boot tethered.

Step 3: Follow the instructions on screen to put your iOS device in DFU mode and boot tethered.
