Microsoft To Release Xbox Live Games For iOS 'Very Soon'
This is of course not new or hot news in town because Microsoft has been working on bringing Xbox live games to iOS platform from quite some time now. Earlier this month a job posting from Microsoft indicated they are working on bringing Xbox Live games to iOS and Android devices. Earlier this month Redmond based software giant published a job opportunity for an iOS developer who would work on porting Xbox Live games to iOS platform. Remember that Xbox Live games are only available of Microsoft Windows Phone 7 devices right now.
Microsoft released their Xbox Live app for iOS in December last year which is available in the app store but with very limited functionality. In current version of Microsoft Xbox Live app for iOS you can only check your progress, edit your profile etc etc. Now there’s a minor update in this story, Microsoft’s spokesman said that they have plans to extend their Xbox Live games on other mobile platform.
Microsoft spokesman stated:
“While the Xbox Live experiences and games always work best on the Windows platform, we understand that some Xbox fans may be using other types of devices. To satisfy that need, we are working to extend a few of our Xbox experiences and titles to other platforms.”
This is a great decision by Microsoft to jump in mobile gaming industry but they will definitely face a lot challenges and not to mention the competition. Both iOS and Android are growing on a good pace and rule 80% of the total smartphone industry. There’s a good chance that Xbox fans that are deprived of Xbox Live games on their smartphone would finally get their favorite Xbox Live games on iOS and Android.
Not only for Microsoft but this is also going to be a challenge for other iOS game developers such as Gameloft. Microsoft would definitely launch hundreds of Xbox Live games on iOS and I believe it will all come down to price. But it’s too early to comment on anything which is being planned in Redmond right now but I hope to see some great titles for iOS platform.
