Microsoft Was The Reason Why Macintosh Sucked In 90s, Says Steve Wozniak
Steve Wozniak, Apple’s co-founder and the guy behind Apple’s most famous and early products like Apple I and Apple II said that it was Microsoft’s fault that Macintosh crashed so much in 90s. Steve Wozniak is on a speaking tour of Australia which is mainly focused to deliver lectures on company’s business philosophy and Steve Jobs’ legacy. In a seminar which was held in Sydney this morning Wozniak told everyone that he found a bug in Microsoft Internet Explorer back in 1996 which caused Macintosh to crash.
“Everyone who ran Internet Explorer you would have several crashes, every day,” he said.
“Move something into folder, it would crash, and you’d have to restart. Type something, crash restart.
“Everyone thought it was the OS (Apple’s operating system). I guess it kind of was because it was allowing all this to happen. But in reality it was Microsoft Internet Explorer.”

He also mentioned that people who used different internet browser like Netscape which was very famous internet browser of the time never experienced such crashes. ”Once a computer got a bad name, it stayed bad forever” he added. Steve Wozniak also discussed the failure of Apple III business computer lineup. According to him, Apple made a huge mistake by calling it an enhanced version of Apple II and Apple III.
“That turned out to be a horrible decision,” “It missed its window. Maybe it would have been successful if we rebranded it and called it the Apple four. But we kept calling it a three. It was a big failure for Apple.”
It is true that Apple trembled in personal computer industry from late 80s till late 90s and the future also looked gloomy. Microsoft, however, was on the top of their game during the same time period, Windows 95 was a huge success for the company and they were doing great. After the return of Steve Jobs as iCEO of the company, Apple made a deal with Microsoft in which software giant agreed to keep their software development program for Macintosh. Internet Explorer as a default web browser in all Macintosh machines was also a part of the same deal.
