What is Redsn0w?

Redsn0w is the most famous jailbreaking tool which is being used to jailbreak every iOS device expect Apple TV right now. History of Redsn0w:

Redsn0w was originally released by the name of QuickPWN by later its name was changed to redsn0w. Like any other software  it evolved and brought support for new devices and stopped supporting older iOS device. Who Should Refrain From Jailbreaking With Redsn0w ?

If you rely on unlock then you should not jailbreak using direct jailbreak method of  redsn0w because when you restore an updated iOS firmware there is great chance that it will update your baseband and you may loose your unlock. But you can use Redsn0w’s Custom IPSW feature to preserve your older baseband and create a custom IPSW file which won’t update your iPhone’s baseband. So if you rely on unlock don’t update your iPhone directly from iTunes or by restoring a stock IPSW firmware file.

How To Jailbreak With Redsn0w:

The process stay the same for jailbreaking your iOS devices using redn0w, we are going to write a universal redsn0w jailbreaking guide which stays the same for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. Current version of redsn0w works on limera1n exploit which was developed by famous George Hotz aka GeoHot. Limera1n is a low level bootrom A4 exploit so it does not support iPad 2 or iPhone 4S which carry Apple’s latest A5 processor.

Here’s a universal redsn0w jailbreaking guide:

Step 1: Connect your iOS device to computer and make a backup all your contacts and phone data just is case you loose anything during the process which is highly unlikely but it’s still a good practice to make back up.

Step 2: Restore your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch with iOS 5.0.1 or any latest “jailbreakable” iOS firmware version.

Warning for unlockers: Restoring a stock IPSW file will update your baseband and you will loose your unlock. If you want to update your device to iOS 5.0.1 with your baseband preserved, you should create a custom iOS 5.0.1 IPSW using redsn0w or sn0wbreeze

Step 3: Launch the latest version of  redsn0w

Step 4: Click Jailbreak

Step 7: In this step make sure your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch is completely turned off.

Click Next and follow the instructions on your screen to put your iPhone in DFU mode;

  • Hold down both the Home button and the Power button for 10 seconds.
  • Release the Power button and continue holding the Home button until (approx 15-25 sec) your device’s screen turn black.

Step 6: Check Install Cydia and click Next

Important: If you’ve already tethered jailbreaked your iOS device on any iOS firmware  and you’re just updating your jailbreak to fix minor issues using redsn0w don’t forget to UNCHECK Install Cydia option.

Step 8: Redsn0w will exploit your iOS device with limera1n, sit back and relax while redsn0w jailbreaks your iOS device. Once this process is complete you will be notified that RedSn0w is done. When your iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch finishes rebooting (5 minutes or so) it will be jailbroken (un)tethered.

This was a universal redsn0w jailbreak guide for (un)tethered jailbreak on any iOS firmware, the process of redsn0w jailbreak remains unchanged. But if sis a tethered jailbreak on your iOS device then you’d need redsn0w to boot your iOS device in jailbroken state every time you reboot. Latest iOS 5.0.1 firmware has been jailbroken untethered so you don’t need to boot your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad

How To Boot In Tethered Mode With Redsn0w:

Once you have jailbroken you will need to rerun redsn0w to boot tethered.

Step 1: From the main RedSn0w menu click the Extras button.

Step 2: Select Just boot from the Extras menu to just boot tethered.

Step 3: Follow the instructions on screen to put your iOS device in DFU mode and boot tethered.

DFU mode instructions:

  • Hold down both the Home button and the Power button for 10 seconds.
  • Release the Power button and continue holding the Home button until (approx 15-25 sec) your device’s screen turn black.
