Apple released a minor iOS 5.1.1 update on 7th May with minor changes. Nothing new was introduced in iOS 5.1.1 but some minor bugs were fixed by Apple in latest update. Even though Apple didn’t brought any baseband changes for iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4 we still recommend users to stay on lower iOS firware versions because we don’t have an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.1.1 as yet. Non A5 devices were able to jailbreak iOS 5.1.1 on iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPod Touch 3G, iPod Touch 4G and iPad using redsn0w but it is still tethered. iPhone-Dev team didn’t release any compatibility update for ultrasn0w unlocking tool which means that even if you have a jailbroken iPhone running iOS 5.1.1 you cannot unlock it using ultrasn0w but now we have a fix for this issue. You can now unlock your iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 running iOS 5.1.1 with Ultrasn0w fixer.

As there’s nothing new in iOS 5.1.1 so we don’t recommend updating your iPhones to iOS 5.1.1 but if you still want to try out this new iOS update and unlock it, just follow this guide and you’d be golden. This is not the first time that an independent developer released an ultrasn0w fixer for latest iOS firmware version, we have witnessed this in the past.  The process is not hard at all but you have to follow every step correctly.

Remember that this is not a new unlock, Ultrasn0w fixer for iOS 5.1.1 will only unlock those basebands which latest version of Ultrasn0w (Ultrasn0w 1.2.5) already supports.

Ultrasn0w Fixer will unlock following iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS basebands on iOS 5.1.1:

  • 01.59.00 (iPhone 4)
  • 04.26.08
  • 05.11.07
  • 05.13.01
  • 05.12.01
  • 06.15.00 (iPad BB patched on iPhone 3GS)

Things you will need during this process:

  • iExplorer software for browsing iPhone (DownloadYou can use other alternatives like iFunBox
  • Ultrasn0w Fixer files (Download)
  • USB Cable for connecting your iPhone to computer

Step 1: Connect your iPhone to computer and make a backup (recommended)

Step 2: Open iExplorer or any other iPhone browsing software you’re using and navigate to /private/var/root/Media

Step 3: Create a folder by the name of “Cydia” once created, create a new directory inside Cydia by the name of “AutoInstall”

Important: These folders are case sensitive, do not change their names like autoinstall or Autoinstall it should be AutoInstall

Step 4: Extract Ultrasn0w Fixer .zip folder and copy all three files inside this directory and paste them in AutoInstall folder without changing their name

Step 5: That’s it! Now reboot your iPhone.

As we mentioned above iOS 5.1.1 has a tethered jailbreak (for now) you will have to boot your iPhone in tethered mode.

How To Boot In Tethered Mode With Redsn0w:

Step 1: From the main RedSn0w menu click the Extras button.

Step 2: Select Just boot from the Extras menu to just boot tethered.

Step 3: Follow the instructions on screen to put your iOS device in DFU mode and boot tethered.

DFU mode instructions:

  • Hold down both the Home button and the Power button for 10 seconds.
  • Release the Power button and continue holding the Home button until (approx 15-25 sec) your device’s screen turn black.

That was it folks you should now have an unlock iPhone 4 or iPhone 3GS kicking latest iOS 5.1.
